ARIRANG is an album that encapsulates the identity of BTS and the universality of the emotions they encounter. BTS have consistently woven their own stories into music, expressing an unwavering authenticity shaped by their journey from boyhood into youth, which has forged a deep connection with listeners around the world. The seven members deeply contemplated the message and musical vision they wished to embody through ARIRANG, striving to find a narrative that best represents BTS today. In this process, their focus returned to their roots-their identity as a band that began in South Korea.
That reflection led them to "Arirang," a song deeply embedded in Korean cultural memory. The album drew inspiration from "Arirang," a traditional Korean folk song that has long symbolized themes of distance, longing, and resilience across generations, and is also recognized as one of the earliest Korean songs recorded in the United States in 1896 by Korean men with American ethnologist Alice Fletcher. The song carries emotions that resonate across cultures and languages, and ARIRANG expands these sentiments into a universal narrative that transcends generations and borders.
BTS reflect on the culmination of their journey to date, channeling their experiences and thoughts into 14 tracks that paint a musical portrait of the group as they are today. The first half of the album sets a powerful tone: from "Body to Body," a roaring anthem to celebrate with fans at live shows, to "Hooligan," which traces their trailblazing journey for many to follow. It continues with "Aliens," which captures BTS' unique identity and aspirations reflected in how they engage with the world, signaling their fiery return through "FYA," and leading into the group's present moment of growth and transformation in "2.0."
At the heart of the album, the interlude "No. 29" features the resonant tolling of the Divine Bell of King Seongdeok. What follows is a vast emotional landscape: the resolve to move forward through the tides of life ("SWIM"), the steadfastness to endure life's endless cycles ("Merry Go Round"), and deeply personal yet universally resonant emotions experienced both on and off stage ("NORMAL"). The latter half also captures the drive to live life fully and freely ("Like Animals"), the confidence of simply being themselves ("they don't know 'bout us"), and profound infatuation ("One More Night"), before concluding with a wholehearted vow of commitment ("Please," "Into the Sun").
With the members steering the creative direction and anchoring every song in raw emotion, this hands-on approach ensured that their personal touch is evident in every track. RM is credited on every track excluding the interlude, while SUGA and j-hope contributed to multiple tracks, including "Body to Body," "Merry Go Round," and "NORMAL." Jimin participated in "they don't know 'bout us" and "Into the Sun," while V contributed to "2.0" and "Into the Sun." Jung Kook also played a key role in the creation of four tracks, including "Hooligan." Additionally, contributing to the album's sound is an elite lineup of world-renowned producers and songwriters including Diplo, Ryan Tedder, Mike WiLL Made-It, Flume, Kevin Parker (Tame Impala), El Guincho, and JPEGMAFIA.
The lead single, "SWIM," centers on the resolve to keep swimming onward through life's many tides. Rather than resisting the current, the song frames the choice to move ahead at one's own pace as an expression of love for life itself. With RM leading the songwriting, his lyrical depth lends further authenticity to the track.
In regards to the track, BTS commented, "A song that mirrors life itself. I hope it resonates with many people as they move through each day, taking each moment as it comes, splashing along, and continuing to swim forward. The more you listen, the warmer it feels, so I hope it becomes a source of strength as people go through their lives. Also, just like the folk song "Arirang," which has been passed from mouth to mouth and stayed with people through generations, I hope "SWIM" will remain close to people's hearts for a long time to come."
The music video for "SWIM" unfolds aboard a ship navigating an endless sea. The ship represents a symbolic space of healing and growth. Inside, a woman struggles, grappling with moments of doubt and pain, while the seven members remain by her side as quiet sources of support. Over time, she reflects on herself and finds the strength to move forward once again. Through these symbolic scenes, the video gently traces a journey of wandering and recovery.
Filming took place in Lisbon, combining scenes shot on an actual ship with purpose-built studio sets to heighten the production's cinematic scale. American actress Lili Reinhart stars in the video, and director Tanu Muino brings the narrative to life with a distinctly cinematic vision.
The performance for "SWIM" highlights BTS' powerful command over the stage. The choreography embraces spatially aware and deliberate movements, creating a sense of precision and elegance while effectively conveying the song's emotional tone. In the chorus, simple yet repeating gestures leave an immediate visual imprint, while the overall restraint in the choreography reflects a more mature artistic sensibility and deepens the audience's immersion.
In celebration of ARIRANG, BTS will hold BTS THE COMEBACK LIVE | ARIRANG, a global live performance streaming on Netflix on March 21 at 8:00 PM KST (4:00 AM PST / 7:00 AM ET).
